Heritage Exchanges between Southeastern Europe and the German-language Sphere - Call for Papers

This interdisciplinary and bilingual conference (held in German and English) will address exchange processes of material and intangible cultural heritage between Southeastern Europe and the German-language sphere.

 

Call for Papers open until 30th of April!

November 16–17, 2023,

Karl-Franzens-University Graz, Austria, held in English and German

Details

 

Possible topics for presentations of 15-min length may include but are not limited to:

  • The heritage of exile, displacement and migration
  • Linguistic, literary and artistic transfers throughout history
  • Dark Heritage or the heritage of war, violence and atrocities
  • The heritage of music, from folk music to pop and other genres
  • Digital heritage and social media
  • The role of archives and museums in the preservation of heritage narratives
  • Performing heritage in religious ritual, dance and folk customs
  • Touristic heritage and travelogues
  • The role of gender, sexuality and the family in heritage dynamics
  • (post)imperial discourses, orientalism, Balkanism and the projected liminality of the Southeastern sphere


Abstracts of max. 250 words in either length, in either English or German, should be emailed to the organizers, Yvonne Živković (yvonne.zivkovic(at)uni-graz.at) and Renate Hansen-Kokoruš (renate.hansen-kokorus(at)uni-graz.at) by April 30.

 

A limited amount of travel grants is available to participants who do not receive any travel funds from their home institution.

Gerald Lamprecht, how should we remember the Holocaust?

27 January marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Ausschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. This day is also International Holocaust Remembrance Day, on which the victims of National Socialism are commemorated worldwide. However, there are now only a few contemporary witnesses left. How can we still remember the horrors of that time without slipping into irreverence? How do we convey the horrific facts to a young generation for whom the Holocaust is far away? And how do we prevent remembrance from becoming an empty ritual? Historian Gerald Lamprecht from the Centre of Jewish Studies provides answers.
