Network Lunch mit Behrouz Boochani

Portrait Boochani

On Monday, 3 June 2024 from 12-14h we would like to give all researchers at the University of Graz on the topics of migration, asylum and borders the opportunity to meet Behrouz Boochani in person and exchange ideas with him. The Network Lunch will take place in Sz 15.21 (ReSoWi, Building A, 2nd floor).

The Cluster ‘Migration, Mobility, Borders in and beyond Europe’ of the Field of Excellence ‘Dimensions of Europe’ invites you to a special occasion:

The renowned activist, journalist and writer Behrouz Boochani, who not only received important literary awards for his book ‘No Friends but Mountains: Writings from the Manus Prison’, but also made him a prominent voice of and for refugees, will visit Graz from May 29th-June 5th 2024. He wrote the book via Whatsupp text messages during his imprisonment on Manus Island, an offshore processing centre for refugees.  The book is an important document for Australia's dehumanising offshore practice, which is now being aspired also by Italy, the UK, Denmark and other EU countries. The book also contains innovative theoretical concepts against the current encampment logic in asylum policies.

Also present at the Cluster Network Lunch on Monday,  3rd of June will be this year's Senior & Junior Visiting Fellows of the Cluster.

Our Senior Fellow Prof. Dr Deniz Yükseker is a sociologist and migration researcher at Izmir University in Turkey who has researched and published widely on the topics of displacement, integration and migration (https://people.ieu.edu.tr/en/haticedenizyuksekertekin/main). On 5 June 2024, she will give a lecture on ‘Migrant Integration in Turkey: Travels of a Concept across Borders and Domains of Knowledge Production’ as part of her fellowship.

Our Junior Visiting Fellow Dr Gustavo Orden de La Bosch is a postdoctoral researcher in the Basque Country in Spain at the University of Deusto. He analyses the European border regime from a legal perspective and has been an affiliated fellow in the Elastic Border Project (https://elasticborders.uni-graz.at/en/research-team/dr.-gustavo-de-la-orden-bosch/) at the University of Graz since March.

Behrouz Boochani is a guest in Graz on the occasion of the conference ‘Camps, Carceral Imaginaries and Critical Interventions’ (https://campsconference-graz.com). On 4th of  June 2024 he will hold a teach-in for students at the University of Graz.

The Network Lunch Meeting is an opportunity to exchange and get to know our guests and to network with colleagues at the University of Graz

Gerald Lamprecht, how should we remember the Holocaust?

27 January marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Ausschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. This day is also International Holocaust Remembrance Day, on which the victims of National Socialism are commemorated worldwide. However, there are now only a few contemporary witnesses left. How can we still remember the horrors of that time without slipping into irreverence? How do we convey the horrific facts to a young generation for whom the Holocaust is far away? And how do we prevent remembrance from becoming an empty ritual? Historian Gerald Lamprecht from the Centre of Jewish Studies provides answers.
