Nationalist visions of Europe date back tot he 19th century and the emergence of pan-European national movements. This lecture will focus on how recent far-right movements have appropriated the idea of Europe and forged a civilisational understanding of Europe based on common descent rather than shared institutions and values. It will show how rather than rejecting European integration, nationalist movements in Europe have appropriate the terminology and notions of Europe to shape an alternative vision of Europe. In doing so, they have co-shaped the way the European Union has been understood.
