REBYOUTH - Rebellious Youth Movements and Alternative Music Cultures and Intersectional Critique in (Post)State Socialist Poland (1977 - 1995)
The project aims to explore the largely overlooked histories of women, queer, and non-white participants in rebellious youth cultures and movements in Poland during late state socialism and in the wake of the sociopolitical changes of the early 1990s.
From the late 1970s to early 1990s, dissident youth movements in Poland were vibrant yet largely undocumented, especially from the perspective of Women*, Queer, Black, and People of Colour (W*-Q-BPoC). With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme, the REBYOUTH project aims to change that narrative. Focused on cultural heritage and dissident practices, it will map W*-Q-BPoC histories in rebellious youth cultures, with an emphasis on music. Through archival research and interviews, the project captures life stories, analyses intersectional dissidence, and explores infrastructures of support. By empowering W*-Q-BPoC voices and uncovering international connections, REBYOUTH will contribute to inclusive historical discourses and memory practices. The findings are expected to enrich our understanding of youth culture and resistance.
