The Aging in Data (AiD) partnership grant brings together an interdisciplinary team of quantitative and qualitative researchers, and affiliated institutions, concerned with the intersections between ‘data’ and ‘aging’. This project asks the question: how is aging being ‘datafied’ (Lupton) in this moment in history? What are the personal, social, political and economic implications for this datafication of aging for different aging subjects? Data is not only personal, it is political. Aging, we argue, is one way to understand new forms of “metric power” (Beers). The Aging in Data partnership grant will bring together an international interdisciplinary team of researchers to research these pressing emergent issues of ‘datafied aging’ from a ‘data justice’ perspective. As our collaborations with community groups, Deaf and disabled older adults, and older adults from a myriad of different cultural backgrounds indicate, their lives may not be represented within existing data sets, a point made by health researchers examining how algorithms that are being used to detect pain thresholds in older persons are based on data inputs from younger populations, producing the potential for high rates of error (Tati et al). Data is not only virtual, it impacts lives. The goal is not to dismiss data, but to articulate the new dilemmas that we encounter as subjects aging in a world of data.
