The Present Dead: Investigating Interactions with the Dead in Early Medieval Central and Eastern Europe from 5th to 8th Centuries CE

In early medieval cemeteries (5th to 8th centuries CE), many cases were noted where graves and the artefacts therein were interfered with soon after a burial. The significance of this practice remains a compelling mystery. Funded by the European Research Council, the PresentDead project will study the practical, mental, and emotional dimensions of this profound connection between the living and the dead. By exploring cemeteries and out-of-cemetery sites across central and eastern Europe and an array of historical texts, the project seeks to investigate diverse contexts, employing cutting-edge scientific methods, technical solutions, and innovative theoretical approaches. Its goal is to increase our comprehension of the complex relationship between the living and the dead during this period.
